Garrick’s Fairytale Journey
Another supremely talented PRG Old Boy lights up the newswires across the world, this time for Golf Lefties seem to be in vogue. Hot on the heels of an all-time great, Phil Mickleson, who recently won The US PGA at the ripe young age of 50 another lefty is emerging as a star of the future on the Pro Golf circuit. Paul Roos Old Boy, Garrick Higgo, made history this weekend when he won his first PGA Tour event at the Congaree Golf club in South Carolina at only his second start on the PGA Tour. By winning he became the youngest South African, at age 22, to win a PGA Tour event since Gary Player in 1958.
Garrick, who has enjoyed a sensational start to his Pro career shot a 3-under par 68 to win by one shot on 11-under par for the tournament, from overnight leader Chesson Hadley, who started his final round with a 4 shot lead. His red hot form which started in mid-2020 has continued throughout 2021 and he has now won 5 Pro tour events in just 27 starts-on three different continents (1 Sunshine Tour, 3 European Tour, 1 PGA Tour). With these wins Garrick (and his team to which he credits a lot of his success, including long time coach Cliff Barnard from Plett and his family who resides at De Zalze in Stellenbosch) has elevated himself to the number 39th ranked player in the world.
Despite his sudden rise to golf fame and the stardom that lies ahead for this uniquely talented young man he remains extremely humble, well-liked, and very respectful. In short – any sponsors dream! When interviewed after his latest win on what form the celebrations would take, Garrick stated “I can’t wait to see my family”.
These are the attributes which make us proud of our PRG Old Boy Garrick Higgo. From everyone in Stellenbosch we wish you a lot more success in the future, Garrick and thank you for representing your Alma Mater, Paul Roos Gymnasium with such pride and dignity!
