Die rektor van Paul Roos Gimnasium, mnr André van Staden en voorsitter van die beheerliggaam, mnr. Roelou Slabbert, verwelkom die aanstelling van mnr Corné Uys as die nuwe Hoof van Rugby by Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Volgens die rektor is die aanstelling, na oorweging van ‘n aansienlike lys van hoogs bekwame kandidate gemaak. Verder het Van Staden beklemtoon dat dit van kritieke belang is vir Paul Roos rugby om die vaardighede van ons talentvolle seuns te slyp tot so ‘n mate dat dit elke rugbyspeler die geleentheid bied om tot sy volle potensiaal te ontwikkel en diegene wat ‘n loopbaan wil volg, ten volle toe te rus om die droom te volg. Volgens hom maak Uys se passie vir die opvoeding van jong spelers, gekombineer met sy kundigheid en liefde vir die spel, hom die perfekte kandidaat vir hierdie rol.

Uys voltooi ’n BA Sportwetenskap met Sielkunde aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch gevolg deur ‘n nagraadse sertifikaat in onderwys, sport en sielkunde.

As ‘n professionele afrigter, bring Corné Uys sy veelsydige vaardighede na Paul Roos ingesluit sy ervaring as hoofafrigter van SAS Rugby se Internasionale Instituut. Hy het vir tien jaar professionele rugby vir spanne soos die Stormers, Cheetahs, Sale Sharks sowel as die Newcastle Falcons gespeel en sy ervaring sal van onskatbare waarde wees in die ontwikkeling van PRG se rugbytalent.

Volgens Phil Pretorius, voormalige Direkteur van Maties Rugby, het Uys  al die eienskappe om op die hoogste vlak mee te ding, ‘n besonderse werksetiek, deursettingsvermoë, innerlike staal en spanwerk. Sy begrip van spelpatrone en aandag aan detail is ‘n groot bate in sy arsenaal as afrigter. Bo alles het hy ‘n aangename persoonlikheid, kan hy maklik met mense skakel en het hy die vermoë om diegene om hom te inspireer en beskik oor al die talente van ‘n uitstekende afrigter.

Hy sal vanaf  11 Oktober 2021 deeltyds die rol van hoof van rugby ter voorbereiding van die voorseisoense program en voltyds vanaf 1 November 2021 vervul. Volgens Uys sien hy uit na die nuwe uitdaging. “ Dit sal ‘n voorreg wees om deel te wees van Paul Roos Gimnasium en die ryk tradisies en erfenis van die skool. Ek is bereid om hard te werk en die ekstra myl te stap ten einde te verseker dat ons iets bou wat volhoubaar is vir die toekoms,”  het Uys aangevoer.

Paul Roos Gimnasium en die ouergemeenskap verwelkom Corné Uys, sy vrou Marie en 3 kinders by die skool en wens hom alle voorspoed toe met sy loopbaan.

The Rector of Paul Roos Gymnasium, Mr André van Staden and Chairman of the Governing Body, Roelou Slabbert, welcomes the appointment of Mr Corné Uys as the new Head of Rugby at Paul Roos Gymnasium.

Mr van Staden said the appointment was made after considering a substantial list of highly competent candidates. It is critical for Paul Roos rugby to hone the skills of our talented boys to the extent that it will offer each rugby player the opportunity to develop to his best ability and leave those that wish to pursue a career in rugby well equipped to do so. “Uys’s passion for educating young athletes combined with his expertise and love of the game makes him the perfect candidate for this role.”

Uys completed a BA Sports Science with Psychology, at Stellenbosch University followed by a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Sport and Psychology.

Uys, as a professional coach, brings his multi-faceted skills set to Paul Roos having been head coach of SAS Rugby International Institute and experience. Uys played professional rugby for 10 years for teams such as the Stormers, Cheetahs, Sale Sharks as well as the Newcastle Falcons and will be looking to share his experience with the PRG players.

Uys takes on the role of Head of Rugby on a part-time basis from 11 October 2021 in preparation for pre-season and on a fulltime basis from 1 November 2021. He is fully committed to this new chapter in his career and to Paul Roos, “It would be a privilege to be part of Paul Roos Gymnasium and the school’s rich traditions and heritage. I am willing to work hard and walk the extra mile to make sure we build a sustainable rugby programme.” Corné Uys.
