A total of 10 PRG Athletes took part in the Athletics South Africa U16; U18 & U20 Track & Field National Championships in Pietermaritzburg from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 March 2023.

Seven of these athletes represented Boland and a further three represent Athletes Academy. The highlight of the week was Luke van der Merwe winning the gold medal and being crowned South African Champion after winning the Men U18 High Jump with a height of 2.05 meters! Luke was also included in the U18 South African squad for the upcoming African Games, being held in Zambia.

Joshua Acker also won the bronze medal for the Men u18 Shotput and a further 7 athletes finished in the top 10 for their age group. Congratulations to these athletes and their coaches!

The following results were recorded during the Championships:

Reuben van der Merwe: Men U18 Javelin – 6^th with 59.71m.

Wayden Julies: Men U18 400m Heats- ran 50.10s; progressed to semi-finals; ran a PB of 49.37 to finish 9^th overall.

Thomas Coetsee: Boys 16 Hammer – threw 49.62m to finish 4^th overall.

Josh Venter: Boys 16 Hammer – threw 36.24m to finish 10^th overall.

Harrison Gibson: Men U18 High Jump – Unfortunately did not qualify for final.

Joshua Acker: Men U20 Shotput – threw 18.12m for the Bronze Medal.

Luke van der Merwe: Men U18 High Jump – jumped 2.05m to win the Gold Medal.

Zak Hickman: Men U18 Hammer – threw 54.59m to finish 4^th.

Handre Nel: Men U20 Pole Vault – Jumped 4.5m to finish 5^th.

Musahdiq Cornelson: Men U18 Long Jump – Jumped 6.65m to finish 7^th.
