Physiotherapist at Paul Roos
Nicola Hanekom is a young, driven and passionate physiotherapist from a small farming community, Klipdale, in the Overberg region where she grew up on the farm. She started at Paul Roos in 2021 and proudly forms part of the high performance unit at the school, whilst also serving the private sector outside of Paul Roos during the week.
Nicola studied BSc Physiotherapy at the University of Stellenbosch and has always shown an interest in human science after having to make use of physiotherapy and rehabilitation due to multiple netball injuries herself. This interest and her sympathy for patients have just grown ever since.
Her true passion lies with working with sports injuries and rehabilitation as well as orthopaedic physiotherapy. She strives to create a comfortable environment for her patients and follows a true patient-centred approach. Being at Paul Roos, Nicola is excited to be able to combine her love for sport, outdoors, human science and true empathy to achieve the best possible outcome in collaboration with the patients as well as other members of the multi-disciplinary team. Returning her patients to their previous highest level of functioning or even better is the gold standard for her.

After completing his BSc Physiotherapy from the University of Stellenbosch in 2019, Lutz van der Merwe went to Upington to complete his Community Service year, but it was ultimately his love for sport which brought him back to the Western Cape. He has been at STH and Paul Roos since 2021 and enjoying every moment.
The desire to help others and his love for sports, is what makes him so passionate about his work. Lutz enjoys building relationships with his patients and tailoring treatments session to fit their every need. He has a passion for orthopaedic and sports-related injuries and strives for perfection in rehabilitation to prevent conditions from re-occurring.
He firmly believes that the successful rehabilitation of their patients relies on the teamwork and clear communication between the two physiotherapists and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. The strengths and conditioning coaches at the school also play a key role in returning the school’s athletes safely back to the field whilst also in top form.
